South Park RPG is “like playing the show”

6 December 2011

As massive South Park fans, we were really caught unaware by GameInformer’s announcement of Obsidian working with Matt Stone and Trey Parker on a South Park RPG.

But there’s just something about this project that makes us tingle in all the right places, and had us waiting in not-so-veiled anticipation for any information about the game to reach our eyes – and thanks to a NeoGAF forum member, GameInformer Magazine in hand, that information has now surfaced.

It's only truly South Park if Randy makes an appearance

As previously reported, you’ll be playing the new kid in town, with the whole point revolving around you trying to fit in. You start off by engaging in some LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) – reminiscent of the Fellowship of the The Lord of the Rings episode – which soon evolves into a real adventure.

Cartman will be helping you set up your class – wizard, paladin, adventurer, rogue, and a fifth one he makes up – so expect something to seem off.

If you’re wondering how the game will look and play out – according to the feature and an interview with Obsidian’s CEO, Feargus Urquhart, making the game true to the show was their top priority – and apparently when Matt and Trey played an early build, they commented how it was like playing an episode of the show.

That can only be a good thing.

Obsidian are trying to balance the game to be truly South Park, but also an epic RPG; you’ll battle by carefully timing attacks, augmenting weapons, using sodas to heal (and coffee to act as “haste”), and there are even going to be summons, too.

There’ll also be collectables, as you get to explore the town of South Park between quests – a town layout that not even Stone and Parker were entirely sure about until now.

So now the big question – how true to South Park is the content really going to be? (ie. Are there going to be naughty swears and gratuitous acts of violence?)

Well take this quote from GameInformer’s interview with Urquhart as you will:

“We’re not entirely sure how the ESRB is going to react to a lot of these things – but the first thing is, we’re not going to worry about it. This needs to be South Park – it needs to be outrageous, it needs to have this crazy crap in it.”

“It needs a lot of swearing, it needs a lot of children dying – things that happen are just crazy. And then, if we have problems, we’ll deal with it – the goal is to not restrict ourselves right now.

“Make it South Park, make it nuts, and, as they say, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

I think I’m so happy I might cry.
