3DS firmware update is live, adds Accomplishments

7 December 2011

Starting, like, now, you can update your Nintendo 3DS’s firmware and enjoy a new bunch of dandy features for your 3D hand-held.

It’s quite a big update (in portable terms, anyway) and includes:

  • Ability to record video in 3D;
  • More camera options, including a stop-motion ability;
  • Accomplishments;
  • Data transfer between 3DS devices (up to 5 times);
  • Mii Plaza updates, including StreetPass Quest sequel;
  • Nintendo Zone (Promotions app) and eShop;
  • Puzzle Swap update.

The biggest little titbit to come out of the update is the Accomplishments addition, which basically came out of nowhere.

The Accomplishments are similar to Xbox Achievements and PlayStation’s Trophies, but for now, it’s only active in the 3DS’s Mii Plaza (but it’s not a stretch to think Nintendo would implement it elsewhere).

You’ll also now be able to transfer data between two 3DS devices, which will be handy for anyone who’s looking to get hold of one of the new colourized versions (or that sexy Special Edition Zelda 3DS) this Christmas.

Of course, Nintendo are limiting the number of times you can transfer anything to 5 – and there will be a time-gap in between transfers – likely in a bid to thwart would-be game-sharers.

Nintendo staff need a bonus this Christmas, too, you know.
