Aion is going free-to-play

15 December 2011

NCSoft has announced that from February onwards it’s fantasy themed MMORPG will no longer require a monthly subscription free to play.

At the same time as the switch to free-to-play comes a change in publisher.

Gameforge will be taking on publishing duties, and will work alongside NCSoft in maintaining new servers as well as maintaining the operation and support for the game.

New features will be added to the game: for example, players will be able to open their own stores and collect an unlimited daily amount of aether and essences. Existing players will receive special “bonuses”.

Aion will become yet another MMORPG to adopt the free-to-play model, which in many instances has shown success via the micro-transaction business model.  You can find out more about the move to free-to-play on Aionfreetoplay.com.
