It’s been a happy holiday season for the big game releases, with blockbusters such as Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim smashing records and emptying wallets globally. It seems however that Skyrim may have been at the top of Santa’s nice list, as the game continues to rack up awards, critical acclaim and sales, showing no signs of slowing down. Its biggest display of domination is in the PC sector, where it has become the fastest selling title on Steam – ever.
Since its November 11 launch, the game has shipped a staggering 11 million units across all three platforms. In their most humble tone, the company commented saying, “Large retail reorders across all platforms and record-breaking digital sales reflect the ongoing global demand by consumers excited to explore this extraordinary fantasy epic.”
Robert Altman, CEO of ZeniMax Media said, “We are gratified that Skyrim continues to garner high review scores and accolades around the world. We are most grateful to our fans for their support and enthusiasm for the game, and their love of the hundreds of hours of gameplay it offers. We continue to strive to deliver the highest quality entertainment experience for everyone. 2012 will be another huge year for our fans, with the release of the Creation Kit, as well as exciting DLC which will add to the richness of this epic adventure.”
Director of Business Development at Valve, Jason Holtman, confirmed Skyrim’s record breaking performance on the Steam platform, “Skyrim is the fastest selling title in Steam’s history. Bethesda’s commitment to and understanding of the PC as a gaming platform shows in the great review scores, spectacular launch, and continued high player numbers that Skyrim has received. We are delighted that Bethesda chose to use Steamworks to support Skyrim both at retail and digitally.”
On the back of their Steam success, Bethesda notes that the PC version of Skyrim in North America posted sales figures three times higher than any other PC game in November.
Skyrim can be expected to maintain this momentum as we head into Christmas.
