Rumour Control: Next Xbox is also a DVR

4 January 2012

Hey! It’s the fourth day of 2012 and we haven’t published a “next-gen” console rumour ye- ah, damn. There goes that new year’s resolution.

Many are pegging 2012 as the year the next generation of consoles gets their big fanfare (with some people even anticipating a 2012 next-gen release from Sony and/or Microsoft *scoffs*) – but no matter what happens, the rumours will continue to fly about until the official unveiling(s).

In this edition of “Nextbox” – Microsoft has been granted a patent over in the US for a device that would serve as both a games console and a digital video recorder (DVR).

Mayhaps this is more legit than it is rumour?

According to the Kotaku report, the patent was applied for way back in 2007, so it may not be something entirely new – but with the Xbox‘s obvious move towards home entertainment streaming in the last dashboard update (most of which is useless to use here in South Africa anyway) – turning their next console into a “does it all” box of media management is looking very likely.

Of course, maybe Microsoft had forgotten all about it and were just as surprised as the rest of us when the patent grant came in.

“DVR consoles? That’s soooooo 2007.”

Or, if you recall Sony’s PSX, which sold so badly that it never left Japan, that’s soooo 2003.
