Mario creator working on “new, original title”

8 January 2012

In a video interview with Zoom.in, video game legend Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that he is currently working on a brand new “original” title.

Given the success of his past creations, such as you know, Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.,  the developer as explains that it’s easy to feel under quite a bit of pressure.

“People have come to expect a lot from me. This certainly makes me feel some pressure,” he said.

“But if you ask me, ‘Is it too much pressure to try to come out with something new?’ I have to say no, I’m enjoying myself. When I make something I always try to do my best.”

Miyamoto also talks about a recent Wired report suggesting that he was due to retire soon, which he says just isn’t true.

“I really appreciate all the kindness given the kind of comments that I made. But to be clear, I have no intention to retire at all. I’m not old enough to think about retirement right now.

“But everyone has to retire at some point. I wanted to make clear that we are preparing for that.”

He also reflects on how long his franchises have persisted, and how they will live on long after he’s gone.

“I become jealous because we have to pass away and they can go on,” he jokes.

“But it’s a good thing. The team behind Super Mario 3D Land were once kids that loved the original. Now they’re kind of paying homage in order to create the latest iteration for today’s customers. The cycle is going to remain so that good characters and franchises can just go on forever.”
