Amid plenty of speculation about a PS4 announcement at E3 in June, Sony has kind of, sort of, more or less denied rumours, claiming that they’re only “just entering into this great period for PS3“.
Which doesn’t actually say much at all except that the PS3 is doing well.
Even more strategically vaguely, Sony prez Andrew House told CVG that the company is not “contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point.”
That doesn’t mean they’re not contemplating future console iterations at all, of course, only that they’re not ready to say anything about it, and June is still six months off.
“But one thing I always point to is that, somewhat in contrast to our major competitors, we have, particularly with PS2, managed the length of the lifecycle and ensured its profitability for our publishing partners for a much longer lifecycle than has been true of the competition,” he added.
So expect to continue seeing a lot of speculation and rumours about a PS4 announcement at E3.
That’s all well and good, except for the fact that the PS3 is not nearly as successful as the PS2. The PS2 could possibly be called one of the most successful consoles of all time. The PS3 only enjoys sharing the name “Playstation” with it’s predecessor. Nothing more.
