Rumour control: MS Points getting binned, real money to be used instead

In news that could be a good or a totally disastrous thing, an industry source is claiming that Microsoft intends to swap out its Microsoft Points system for real cash by the end of 2012.

According to an exclusive report on Inside Mobile Apps, a “a source with knowledge of the company’s decision”, all transactions would be resolved in the regional currency set on a user’s account profile, which South Africans will immediately realise is potentially a huge problem.

For those of us holding out on migrating to the rubbish local Xbox LIVE service, we might no longer have much choice unless we own foreign credit cards. This is my not-happy face.

For the moment, Microsoft is playing its usual “we don’t comment on rumour or speculation, lol” card.

BUT! It seems unlikely they’d do something like this, and for one very obvious reason (okay, James actually pointed it out) – putting fixed cash values on Xbox LIVE titles would mean people no longer have small amounts of Microsoft munnies left in their virtual pockets.

And that would mean nobody buying premium dashboard themes or junk for their Avatars.

I mean, seriously, nobody actually buys MSP just for that stuff except that time I bought MSP for the Gears of War Ticker pet but that’s different because it’s a Gears of War Ticker pet and who wouldn’t have to have one? Exactly.

Some people don’t have credit cards or refuse to use them and PayPal is a nightmare to deal with. MS, will probably have both systems available which would be a smart thing to do.
