Blizzard auctions off WoW servers

27 January 2012

In a move that is both incredibly geeky and awesome, Blizzard is auctioning off the server blades that powered various realms in the WoW universe.

The parts being auctioned off are known as server blades, and house the core components such as the CPU and RAM that keeps the server running.

Each comes in its own glass and steel case, and ships with a plaque showing the name of the Realm that the server powered, along with the dates of when the server started and ended.

The plaque also contains a small passage, which reads, “Blizzard Entertainment has carefully preserved and archived our retired server blades, releasing only a limited number for a noble cause. To us, this server blade is more than just hardware: within the circuits and hard drive, a world of magic, adventure, and friendship thrived. From fishing in quiet lakes to defeating Arthas in Icecrown Citadel, this blade was home to thousands of immersive experiences across the world of Azeroth and beyond. We thank you for the safekeeping of this important part of history.”

So why is Blizzard doing all of this? Apart from making many gamers feel warm and fuzzy in their happy place, all profits from the auctions will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

St. Jude is known for their research and treatment of children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

So head on over to the bidding page and fight against other WoW players over a bit of really interesting gaming paraphernalia, funding a good cause.
