Everquest is going free-to-play

When we discuss titles that laid the foundations for the MMO industry, our thoughts all too often go straight to World of Warcraft. In fairness, WoW is one of the most successful MMO released to date (even despite League of Legends suprassing it in users), however, it was not the game that started the MMO revolution.

While Everquest may not be the prettiest MMO currently still playable (it may actually be the ugliest), it did lay the foundations for current-generation gems like WoW, Rift, and more recently, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Released thirteen years ago, and followed up by eighteen expansion packs, Everquest has retained its subscription model throughout its elongated lifespan. Until now that is. Sony Online Entertainment has announced that Everquest will become free-to-play in March 2012.

New and old players will received a welcome pack full of fancy in-game items and experience potions.

Sony also recently switched DC Universe Online from its subscription model to free-to-play, and in the process increased the game’s concurrent user stats by 600%.

More details will be shared during Sony’s webcast on Thursday evening (2 Feb).
