Rumour control: Sony is developing a 3D camera peripheral

22 February 2012

In today’s round of No Way, Lol!, Sony has apparently filed a patent for something that looks and sounds very much like Kinect.

Which looked and sounded a lot like the original PlayStation 2 EyeToy.

Which admittedly looked and sounded rather like the Dreamcast’s Dreameye.

Which was really just a posh webcam, but let’s stop there.

According to a report over on Kotaku, the patent is for a “USER-DRIVEN THREE-DIMENSIONAL INTERACTIVE GAMING ENVIRONMENT”, which must be important because it’s all in capital letters.

The accompanying artwork clearly shows some kind of camera peripheral, as well as its tracking space.

Perhaps most significantly though, the patent was filed by Richard Marks, the brain behind the PlayStation Move.

As Kotaku’s Luke Plunkett points out, this doesn’t mean Sony is actually working on this thing, but that it’s at least something they’re having a big think about. A zillion Kinect sales has got to look pretty persuasive against the three or four PlayStation Move sales.
