Team SA Battlefield 3 hopes dashed by Russian forfeit

28 February 2012

You might remember that last week South Africa’s Battlefield 3 team took down Australia, taking their first win in their Nations’ Cup 2012 campaign.

Having lost against Finland in their opening match, and then against Belgium in their second round, Team South Africa was picked to lose against a strong Australian team in week three.

However, the team managed to defeat the Australians 13-0 in the first round and then 23-0 in the second round.

Over the last weekend of competition, SA was scheduled to play Russia.

Russia recently lost badly to Australia, and if South Africa had been able to beat Russia as convincingly as Australia did, they might have earned enough points to go through to the next round of the competition.

So there was a lot riding on the game, which would ultimately determine whether SA remained in the competition.

It was with great sadness then, that MSSA president Collin Webster revealed to MyGaming that Russia unexpectedly and without any explanation forfeited the match against South Africa.

As a result, South Africa got the win by default, but it was not enough for the team to proceed through to the next round, and their Nation’s Cup 2012 campaign is now over.

Chatting candidly about the experience, Webster lamented that Russia’s forfeit left a bitter taste in the players’ mouths. Had they been able to pull off a convincing enough win, they would still be in the competition, and given that Australia managed to beat Russia easily, and SA last weekend beat Australia, it was entirely possible that the team was going to deliver.

Despite SA’s campaign ending on a disappointing note, Webster remains positive about South Africa’s performance, saying that not only did the team play well, but they also behaved with dignity and grace throughout the event.

SA’s Battlefield 3 team will remain unchanged until the next team trials, which will take place at the end of the 2012.
