PS Vita: how to get trophies in your second-hand games

29 February 2012

Ha, Sony thought they could be clever and disable trophies in secondhand PS Vita games – but they didn’t count on cleverer people working out how to disable that.

The PSV has barely been out a week on this side of the planet, and Sony’s plot to end the used game market has already been broken.

Apparently, on booting up a pre-owned game, you’ll get the following message: “You cannot earn trophies in this application. Only the first player to use an application can earn trophies. To earn trophies, you must link the Sony Entertainment Network account of the first player to use this application with the PS Vita system.”

According to Pocket Gamer, this is very easily gotten around with a rootkit injection, a BIOS reset, and a bit of basic soldering and rewiring.

Just kidding, all you have to do is reformat the card.

HOW TO:

  1. Jump to the PSV’s main screen, and press and hold down for two seconds until the “…” bubble appears to the top-right of the game’s icon.
  2. Press the bubble, and choose “Delete”. A “All data related to this application will be deleted” confirmation prompt will pop up. Choose “OK”.
  3. SECONDHAND GAMER WINS!

The article also notes that erasing this data won’t affect the previous player’s trophies, so it’s all good. Now get out there and stick it to the man, man.
