If you were considering applying for residency in Norway, this may sway your decision.
Gamers attending The Gathering LAN event in Norway will have access to a 200Gbit/s internet connection, the result of an ego-war between Norway and Sweden.
The Gathering previously held the record for fastest Internet connection, an impressive 110 Gbit/s speed pipe installed at last year’s event. However, later in the year Swedish rival Dreamhack one-upped the Nords with a 120 Gbit/s pipe.
You can’t keep those Nords down though. “Just like cross-country skier Northug answers the Swedes before the finish line, The Gathering and Altibox answers the Swedish record with a new world record, ” according to a write up on The Gathering’s website.
Getting off cross-country skiers for a second to talk about speeds, The Gathering claim the connection is capable of downloading 5,120 5Mb songs from iTunes every second.
Norway’s previously unknown scorn of Thailand also came through, when they noted that The Gathering connection is faster than the 158 Gbit/s of total bandwidth available to Thailand’s population of 60 million.
It’s not yet clear whether The Gathering will install a “Download the whole internets” button at the event, but with that amount of bandwidth it might not be such a bad idea.
