Mass Effect 3 on PS3 has framerate issues

9 March 2012

If you just got your Mass Effect 3 N7 Collector’s Edition for PS3 shipping notification and you’re spazzing out all over the place like a 6-year old at Christmas, you… you might want to sit down before reading this.

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry tech wizards have released an analysis of the game’s performance on PS3, and it’s a bit bleak.

According to their report, the game “often” drops to 20 frames per second in outdoor environments, and even lower during cutscenes with multiple NPCs and transparency effects.

“The 360 version is also liable to dip during like-for-like circumstances, although never quite as much; as per the demo, the action remains v-synced, though the odd, unnoticeable tear may occur at the very top of the screen when the engine is under stress,” writes Digital Foundry’s Thomas Morgan. “As far as traversal gameplay goes, the 360 only shows occasional blips in visual feedback, as opposed to the more regular stretches of 20 FPS gameplay we can see on PS3.”

On the other hand, PS3 players don’t have to swap discs. So there’s that.
