Bethesda vs. Mojang: it’s over

11 March 2012

Last year, the spat between Minecraft developers Mojang, and big-daddy, super-publisher Zenimax/Bethesda, over the use of “Scrolls” as a title for Mojang’s next game, was all but wrapped up.

The last we heard, was that Mojang won an interim injunction and was allowed to push ahead with the title. Now, after a few more months of legal matters, the whole affair is officially wrapped up, and the companies have settled.

Minecraft creator, Markus “notch” Persson tweeted the victory, saying “We’ve settled with Bethesda! Yaaaay! <3”

“The settlement is that we give them the trademark, get to keep the name, and won’t make an Elder Scrolls competitor using the name.”

Over on Mojang’s site, Chris Manneh put it more more clearly:

“Dear members of the internet, we have settled the lawsuit over Scrolls and Mojang and Bethesda are friends again. To answer the big question – yes Scrolls is still going to be called Scrolls. To answer the second question – we aren’t going to keep the trade mark.

“For us this was never about a trade mark but being able to use Scrolls as the name of our game which we can – Yey.”

Bethesda has now wrapped up their lawsuits with both Interplay and Mojang. Perhaps they’re looking for someone else to sue.
