Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition announcement breaks the internet

15 March 2012

Not the most graceful start to the big Baldur’s Gate announcement said clock was supposed to introduce – but after a few minutes of impatient fanboy sweating, the big reveal came through:

Baldur’s Gate is getting Enhanced.

Information is pretty scarce, seeing as the site is unavailable from so many people loading the page to see what it’s all about; but we do know that Beamdog and Overhaul Games will be handling the release, and that it will be coming in “summer 2012”.

Beamdog and Overhaul games also brought us MDK2 HD, so bringing old favourites to a new age is sort of their thing, it seems.

You know when a game series is super popular simply by the fact that every website carrying a bit of news regarding it is also crashing from so many people clicking through.

We’re trying to get more information, but it seems the announcement broke the internet.

Article Update

According to Beamdog’s press release, they’ve confirmed our earlier suspicions that the game will be running on the Infinity Engine, but will be re-forged and will have some modern updates. The Infinity Engine brought the game’s isometric perspective, so this is good news for series fans.

To remain true to the original, the team working on the enhanced edition will include members from the original team. More information will be making its way out in the coming months.

Courtesy of Beamdog’s Trent Oster tweeting up a storm, we can also confirm that there’s Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced + Tales of the Sword Coast expansion as well as Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced + Throne of Bhaal expansion. So the news just keeps getting better.

Colour us excited – we can’t wait!
