Innovative FPS puzzle-game Portal 2 was the big success at the 2012 BAFTA awards, taking home the coveted Best Game award.

Valve also has to make space in their trophy case for Best Design and Best Story, which were also awarded to Portal 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 went home empty-handed, getting pipped by Battlefield 3 in the Audio and Online Multiplayer awards. DICE was further chuffed when Battlefield also scooped the public-voted GAME award of 2011.

Both FPS giants were undone by the Dark Knight in Best Action game, where Batman: Arkham City took the honours.

Interestingly, Modern Warfare 3 but not Battlefield 3 was nominated in this category.

Some may be surprised to see that neither of the two FPS juggernauts even cracked a nomination for Game of the Year, getting edged out by the likes of FIFA 2012, L.A. Noire and Skyrim.

Also of note is that critically acclaimed RPG Skyrim didn’t win a single award.

Markus Persson was given the Special Award for his innovative work on international phenomenon Minecraft.
