XFX has traditionally specialized in manufacturing Nvidia graphics cards.
The past year has seen ATi bring some very impressive hardware to market, such as the HD 4850, HD4870 and the X2 variants of these two cards.
Although Nvidia has come back strongly with price cuts and the likes of the GTX 260 216 as well as the GTX 295, the general consensus among people who aren’t absolute Nvidia fanboys, is that Nvidia were caught with their pants down in mid 2008.
We can’t really blame them however, as economics 101 will tell you that you only need to be good enough to beat your competition, and for a good two years, that wasn’t very hard for Nvidia. ATi struggled with their 2000 XT and HD 3000 series, leaving Nvidia to dominate proceedings, especially with the likes of the 8800GT.
Things have moved along however, and ATi are back where they should be as the dangerous underdog.
XFX is one of the best manufacturers of graphics cards in the world, and they seem to have taken note of ATi’s comeback. The company is already manufacturing most Radeon HD 4000 series graphics cards.
AMD South Africa has expressed particular excitement regarding the union of the two companies and its significance locally. We can’t say much now, but watch this space for future developments.
