Sega has announced that a massive update is set to go live for Total War: Shogun 2 alongside the release of the Fall of the Samurai expansion later this week.
The patch introduces some cool stuff, including 40 vs 40 battles and improved AI.
A couple of the changes being implemented will only affect The Fall of the Samurai expansion, but the majority apply to the standalone game too.
There is a massive change log that you can check out over here, but here are some of the primary changes:
- 40v40 unit battles available via ‘control large armies’ option in Custom Battles and Multiplayer
- Numerous Battle and Campaign AI improvements (see Battle and Campaign sections below)
- Greatly reduced save-game file sizes (meaning reduced game save and load times) and full Steam Cloud support
- Battlefield load time improvement (approximately 30% dependent on machine spec)
- Greatly reduced AI turn-time
- 22 brand new Land, Naval and Siege battle-maps
- Towers can now be ordered to fire at specific targets
- General optimisations across all areas of the game
- Ability to queue technology tree research
- Ability to set groups to AI control
- Campaign AI turn-times reduced due to pathfinding optimisations
On top of the general patch stuff that we have come to expect, the patch will also introduce 12 new multiplayer maps, 6 new naval battles, and 4 new siege battles.
On a side note, Total War: Shogun 2 is on special on Steam for just $7.50 (R60) today. If you already own Shogun 2, then check out the The Rise of the Samurai campaign, which is also on special for $2.50 (R20) today.

They’ve supposedly also fixed the desynchronisation experienced in multiplayer/co-op. Although I don’t see that explicitly stated in the patch notes.
I’ll have to see if I can muster up the willpower to risk another enjoyable game only to have it ruined a quarter of the way in.
