Mass Effect to come to PS3?

4 February 2009

EA has had a lot to say for themselves over the past 24 hours. News of their massive third quarter financial loss, followed by the Sims 3 and Dragon Age being pushed back has hardly been encouraging.

However, there is some good news hidden in the words of EA’s CEO John Riccitiello.

And those words are “[In Q4], BioWare will release Mass Effect 2 on multiple platforms,”

Mass Effect is arguably the best Sci-fi RPG ever made, depending on who you ask. An engaging story, incredibly immersive atmosphere driven by top notch visuals and a thoroughly engaging sound design, as well as entertaining gun fights and your own space ship with which to explore the galaxy made for something truly special.

It makes sense then that part two of the proposed trilogy is the focus of many avid gamers’ attention.

The original launched as an Xbox 360 exclusive, but was followed a few months later by a PC port. The PS3 never received the title. However, since Mass Effect’s development days, a lot has changed. Most importantly, in late 2007, Electronic Arts bought out Bioware, the developers behind the Mass Effect franchise.

EA are a company that is known for catering to multiple platforms.

“We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible,” EA’s Gerhard Florin said to BBC News in an interview.

Therefore, when EA’s CEO starts speaking out about Mass Effect being multi-platform, the gaming community listen intently. Unfortunately, the word PS3 was not mentioned, and it could just be that once again Mass Effect will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC.

However, if EA’s track record is anything to go by, then it is likely that they will at least push for a PS3 version. Considering their current financial situation, they could certainly use the extra sales.

Update

EA has since announced that Mass Effect 2 is scheduled for 2010, sometime between January and March.
