Preview: Flower

Developed by independent games developer “Thatgamecompany”, and appearing exclusively on Sony’s PlayStation Network for the PS3, “Flower” will most likely be one of the most memorable games of 2009, at least in terms of originality and innovation.

The game’s unique concept makes it automatically stand out from pretty much everything else you are likely to hear about in main stream gaming.

In flower, the player controls the wind, guiding and growing a swarm of petals as they interact with other flowers and the surrounding environment. The goals and journey in each level vary, but all involve flight, exploration and interaction with the level.

The game will make use of the PS3’s SIXAXIS controller’s motion sensing capabilities. Players will control the wind by gently manipulating the control’s tilt sensor. Pressing any face button will accelerate the pace at which the wind moves the petals. 

The player will accumulate swarms of flower petals as he/she moves at his/her own pace within the environment.

From what we have seen, Flower is a particularly visually driven game, making use of vivid colors and impressive lighting effects to draw players into the game.

Each level will tell the story of a different flower’s dream as it sits on a windowsill in a dull city apartment.  As the player progresses through the game, the apartment and city will gradually become more vibrant and colourful.

Although it may not be everybody’s cup of tea, we are eagerly looking forward to what should be a welcome breath of fresh air.  

Flower is scheduled to launch on PSN on Feb 12.

Tech Fact: In Flower, over 200,000 blades of grass are simulated and animated simultaneously on-screen at a given time.
