Another day, another next-gen console rumour – and today, it’s the Nextbox 1080’s amazing 16-core CPU from the future.
This is according to the latest issue of Xbox World Magazine, which claims that console devkits codenamed “Durango” were sent out to developers a month ago. The devkits allegedly feature a 16-core IBM Power PC CPU and a graphics processor comparable with AMD’s DX11-enabled Radeon HD 7000-series graphics cards.
It’s not the first time the same name has turned up, either – last month, “Durango” was described as a console with no disk drive that wouldn’t play pre-owned games. Awesome.
“It’s a ridiculous amount of power for a games machine – too much power, even,” said XBW. “But remember, Kinect 2 could chew up four whole cores tracking multiple players right down to their fingertips, so it’ll need a lot of power.”
A lot of power, mind you, that isn’t even available for home PCs yet – AMD shipped its 16-core Bulldozer CPU in November last year, but only for high-end business servers.
