Nvidia’s 9800GTX + is a very good graphics card. It offers fairly highend performance at a very competitive price point. So why is Nvidia canning the card?
Well, they aren’t, not really. However, as from now onwards, Nvidia is no longer supplying the 9800GTX+, effectively replacing it with the new GTS 250. And when we say replacing, we really mean renaming.
The GTS 250 having just gone to retail is almost identical to Nvidia’s outgoing 9800GTX +. Nvidia is pulling their classic switcheroo maneuver, a tactic that is not foreign to the company.
As soon as supply channels dry out, the 9800GTX+ will officially no longer be available at retail.
In testament to how similar the 9800GTX + is to the GTS 250, the two will even be able to work together in SLI, as long as they both have the same amount of onboard memory. The GTS 250 is also priced very similarly to the 9800GTX +. Both cards are available for around $150.
