We have recently been pleased to report that AMD/ATi has reduced the price of its HD 4870 to €149 (R2000) – Oh how we wish for the day that an HD 4870 is available in SA for R2000.
Not to be outdone, Nvidia has gone and slashed the pricing on its GTS 250 and GTX 260 by between 10 and 15 percent.
The GTS 250, which is essentially a rebranded 9800GTX+ has been reduced from €139.00 (R1777) to €119.00 (R1520).
The GTX 260 can now be found for €173 (R2210), a significant drop from the €200 (R2560) + price point it was selling for just a few weeks ago.
While ATi has dropped the price of the HD 4870, the HD 4850 is still retailing for €120. We cannot see ATi maintaining this price point, and we are sure they will look to undercut the GTS 250.
While it is all well and good discussing international price cuts, our local pricing system still remains mysteriously affected by inexplicable hikes. An ATi representative told MyGaming that they have limited control over the pricing of their graphics cards in SA, but that the local distributers generally act in accordance with international price fluctuations and decreases, so at this point it is a case of wait and see.
