Sony has announced a new fighting game featuring all their well-known Playstation characters, entitled Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. The game is being developed by independent studio SuperBot, and if you’re thinking it sounds an awful lot like Super Smash Bros. – it is.
The game plays very similarly to the source material it’s clearly drawing inspiration from. Just like Smash Bros., it’s a multiplayer, side-scrolling fighter which allows you to control Playstation’s most popular characters, including the likes of Kratos, Fat Princess and Sly Cooper. Sony says you’ll also be able to play characters from third-party games that have been featured on Playstation.
The SuperBot studio has over 100 veterans on their bill, a lot of them with experience in fighting games – the staff of the California-based studio was apparently hand-picked to develop this game, so we should be expecting a polished final product.
Sony calls the game “a celebration for fans of Playstation”, and indeed it is, with levels based on environments from past Playstation games, along with familiar soundtracks.
The game features a number of features seen in Smash Bros., such as team battles, tournament play, special event and custom battles, as well as the option to pick fights online.
Despite the obvious borrowing from Smash Bros., this looks to be a very cool game. Smash Bros. after all is probably the most fun you can have on a Wii, and beating face with your favourite characters doesn’t get old fast. With the pedigree SuperBot is bringing to the table, I’d say we’re in for a treat.
