Rovio made R770 million on Angry Birds last year

7 May 2012

1. Launch a game consisting entirely of flinging birds at stuff with a gigantic slingshot.
2. Release loads of merchandise.
3. ????
4. PROFIT!

This is, of course, just a dramatic reenactment of Rovio’s business plan for the purposes of this report, but I’d imagine it’s probably pretty close to the actual thing.

In the last fiscal year (which ended at the end of April), the Angry Birds dev apparently cashed in a total of €75.4 million (R770 million), including a profit of €48 million (or about R490 million in local munnies), off the Angry Birds brand, including the games and merchandising deals. The company’s employee count also increased from 28 to 224 in the same period.

I only wish I’d come up with the idea of flinging birds at stuff with a gigantic slingshot earlier. I mean, it just seems so obvious now, doesn’t it?

The latest Angry Birds game – Angry Birds Space – has already been downloaded over 50 million times since it was released in March.
