Fudzilla has reported that AMD’s upcoming HD 4890 will require up to 190W of power in order to run at its full potential. Although the GPU is technically more power efficient than its predecessors, it will ship clocked at a monstrous 850MHz, and will therefore require a fair amount of juice from the PSU.
AMD has no current plans to release an X2 version of the HD 4890, but if they did, the dual GPU version would require an unprecedented 380W from the PSU. To put this in perspective, the HD 4870X2 requires 286 Watts, and Nvidia’s performance king, the Geforce GTX 295, carries a TDP (Thermal design Power) rating of 289W.
The HD 4890 X2 would therefore be relatively impractical graphics solution.
With the HD 4890 shipping at 850MHz, overclockers should easily be able to push it over the 900MHz mark. Some overclockers may even be able to get the card to run at 1000 MHz. Even at 1000MHz however, it is doubtful that the HD 4890 will be able to match Nvidia’s GTX 275.
