AMD is planning to internationally release its 3.2GHz clocked, top of the range Phenom II CPU in late April. Rumours circulating over when the flagship processor would become available have been circulating for months. Although no solid date has been set, industry insiders are speculating that it will be April 20.
Although the Phenom II X4 955 is not marked to compete with the Core i7 965 or 975 it should offer a better performance versus price ratio for the average user. AMD is known for its competitive pricing on the high-end scale when compared with other manufacturers such as Intel.
This processor comes as a welcome update to January’s Phenom II X4 940 which offers a core speed of 3GHz and 2MB of L2 cache, 6MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 125W. The 955 will however offer a faster clock speed of 3.2GHz which will be an improvement of 200MHz.
The new AMD CPU is due to sell at slightly above the $300 range in the US and is expected to be the fastest AM3 CPU available. It has been confirmed that the processor will have 125W TDP and 8MB cache.
Any announcements as to the price or when the CPU will be available in South Africa have not yet been made although it is not unreasonable to assume that there will be a waiting period of a few weeks.
