Little Big Planet headed to bargain bin

20 April 2009

Just six months after having been released, critically acclaimed PS3 exclusive Little Big Planet is already heading to the bargain bin.

Although being praised for its original take on platforming and user generated content, Little Big Planet failed to set the sales charts alight.

Sony told MCVUK that “In general the retail environment is very tough at present, but the positive consequence is that when consumers are feeling the need to monitor their spending there are still some attractive deals to be had if people shop around,”.

This came in response to claims that by dropping the price, Sony is deviating from its official pricing strategy guide.

However, Sony’s new strategy is fairly watertight:

“It is commonly accepted that in times of economic hardship, people value their entertainment. And the multiple hours of entertainment value represented in a video game can make games a more attractive purchase, especially at a discounted price.”

Consequently the game is now sitting at around the £11.00 mark on international websites such as Amazon. Shopto.net, a popular UK based e-tailer lists the game for £16.99, and will probably be reduced in the near future. Unfortunately however, it is no longer possible for South African’s to register with Shopto, although, existing customers will be able to purchase the game at the new price point.

It remains to be seen how long it will take for the reduced price to filter down to the South African market.
