Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning dev in big trouble

18 May 2012

In news from the real world, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning developer, 38 Studios, is reportedly teeter-tottering on the brink of disaster, with the company failing to pay staff this week and defaulting on payment of a huge loan to the state of Rhode Island.

If you didn’t buy that game, this is your fault. That includes me, but I don’t like fantasy RPGs anyway, so I get a free pass.

According to Joystiq, the company sent a cheque for an overdue $1.125 million payment on a $75 million loan to the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC), but it was later returned because there wasn’t enough cash to actually back it up. RIEDC head, Keith Stokes, the man who approved the loan in the first place, has reportedly resigned.

All 38 Studios temp workers and contractors were also apparently handed pink slips of doom.

For both of you holding out on a Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning II, I’d suggest finding some other reason to live.
