Earlier this week IGN said a little birdie had told them that a Dead Island sequel was to be developed by Yager Development, the people behind Spec Op: The Line.
However publisher Deep Silver has responded, saying that there’s no truth to the rumour at all. Oops.
“We are neither working with Yager on Dead Island 2 nor do we have any contractual agreement with Yager about any project at this point,” said Deep Silver development director Guido Eickmeyer.
“Yager and Deep Silver do have a very close relationship, based on personal and professional connections between the parties. There is a legitimate chance that we will – at some point – work together on a title – and I would not even exclude the possibility that this could be something within the Dead Island franchise.” Oh Guido, you’re so coy.
In case the point wasn’t quite clear enough, Eickmeyer repeated, “We have neither something in place or in discussion between the parties that would explain such a news, nor do we have Dead Island 2 in concept or production with external partners.”
This marks another disappointment for fans of the original, as this is the second time a rumoured sequel has been shot down. The first time was when the original developer, Techland, filed a trademark for “Dead World”, causing widespread speculation that we’d have a zombie sequel on a grander scale.
Although there’s no news of a sequel for now, Deep Silver is clearly open to the possibility; zombie fans may not have to wait much longer for a real announcement.
