Games you can play this week

21 May 2012

The week following the third iterations of Diablo and Max Payne is going to be a hard act to follow, although it looks as if some gamers are in for a surprise given that a handful of undercover gems that may have been overlooked are set to release.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

The next entry into the Ghost Recon series has been hiding in the back of gamers minds for a while now.

Putting aside the game’s bizarre marketing strategy which included pseudo-celebrity Coco, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is looking to be one of the strongest games within the shooter genre this year.

The tactical, yet action-packed gameplay has tantalised our gaming taste-buds, with its mix of strategic shooting and all-out action approach.

Featuring a bucket-load of explosions, gun-fire, synchronized shots, nuclear conspiracies, and just about everything else you’d expect from a modern military shooter, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier should appeal to a lot of gamers this week, while also bringing something new to the table.

Dragon’s Dogma

Dragon’s Dogma has crawled out of nowhere, but could be one of the games in line as a sleeper hit this year. The massive open-world game puts an action-packed spin on the traditional role-playing formula, by combining hack-and-slash elements with traditional tactical facets.

The innovative action/RPG is also bringing a number of new features to the table, most notably, insane boss battles that utilise a clever climbing mechanic – which allows players to climb the creatures and mythical monsters of the game, in order to find weak spots. It’s as if Shadow of the Colossus, Dark Souls and Dragon Age had a baby.

Dragon’s Dogma is one of those games that initially looked like it would slip under the radar, but Capcom are forcing people to realise that the Hiroyuki Kobayashi-produced RPG deserves some serious attention.

While Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Dragon’s Dogma are battling it out for this week’s attention, there are a bunch of other exciting games to check out. The spin-off in Codemasters’ off-road racing series, Dirt Showdown (which MyGaming recently previewed) is set to slide in this week, along with Lollipop Chainsaw, Starhawk and Mario Teenis Open.
