Telkom ADSL speed upgrades incoming

30 May 2012

Telkom looks set to bump up the speed of their 384kbps ADSL service to 1Mbps, and boost the speed of their 1Mbps clients to 2Mbps. However, 4Mbps and 10Mbps ADSL users may have to wait for Telkom’s MSAN project to be completed before they get higher speeds.

It is rumoured that Telkom is planning to announce the ADSL speed upgrades during its annual report event in June 2012, but details about the planned dates remain sketchy.

A well placed industry source said that Telkom’s 1Mbps DSL clients will get upgraded to 2Mbps in June. The decision on 384kbps upgrades, he said, is still pending but is likely to happen “soon”.

It is understood that the speed upgrades may be exchange specific, which means that ADSL users may not all get upgraded at the same time.

In March 2012, Telkom officially announced that it has begun rolling out 3,700 multi-service access nodes (MSANs) that will replace 2,700 older generation cabinets and add another 1,000 to their number.

MSANs can be used to offer higher speed ADSL (ADSL 2+), very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL), and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services.

The MSANs will allow for much higher DSL speeds which may well mean speed upgrades for 4Mbps and 10Mbps ADSL users in selected areas.

However, it is rumoured that KT Corp has proposed a flat rated ADSL access fee where subscribers will simply get the highest possible speed on their ADSL connection. Telkom has however denied that it is currently discussing a flat rated ADSL access service.
