ADSL downtime – international connectivity problems explained

Internet service providers WebAfrica and Afrihost were both reporting this morning (29 June 2012) that they were experiencing problems on their international ADSL networks.

“We are currently experiencing increased packet loss and latency on our international ADSL network,” Afrihost said. “Our engineers are attending to the matter and hope to have it resolved soon.”

WebAfrica posted in their forum that they’re experiencing “degraded connectivity to international services”.

Later in the thread, WebAfrica explained that their primary SAT-3 cable links to London are “impacted”” It is understood that there is a break on the cable near Portugal.

“Websites, e-mails and other services hosted internationally will be affected,” Afrihost said.

Update: According to RSAweb, the outage on SAT-3 will only be restored on Sunday, 1 July 2012.
