Microsoft announced that computers running Windows 8 will go on sale in October 2012, in time for the festive season. However, South African consumers are still in the dark as to when they will see Windows 8 products.
Windows Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer Tami Reller said this week that Windows 8 is on track to “Release to Manufacturing (RTM)” in the first week of August.
“For enterprise customers with Software Assurance benefits, they will have full access to Windows 8 bits as early as August,” said Reller.
“RTM is when we’ll be turning on the commerce platform so that developers can start earning money for their apps – we’ll have more to share soon.”
Reller went on to say that Windows 8 will reach general availability by the end of October. “This means that new Windows 8 and Windows RT PCs will be available to buy and upgrades will be available starting in October,””said Reller.
Reller added that Windows 8 will be available in 109 languages across 231 markets worldwide.

It is expected that South Africans will also be included in the October launch date, but Microsoft South Africa could not give any details about Windows 8 in the local market.
“Unfortunately, we are still not in a position to comment locally [on the Windows 8 launch in South Africa and whether South Africans will be able to buy Windows 8 computers in October],” Microsoft SA said in response to questions about Windows 8.
