EA: “We’d love to publish Kingdoms of Amalur sequel”

14 July 2012

Despite the untimely demise of Kingdoms of Amalur publisher 38 Studios, EA say they would love to publish a sequel.

In the latest issue of US magazine Game Informer, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said he hopes that a sequel to the fantasy RPG may one day be possible.

“I think it’s unfortunate how everything worked out [for 38 Studios],” Gibeau said. “At the end of the day, we saw a lot of creativity and vision in the team that Curt [Schilling] put together. We thought the game was terrific. It reviewed well.

“We built a good business there and hope there’s a sequel to it someday. We’d love to be a partner for that.”

Kingdom of Amalur publisher 38 Studios closed earlier this year after financial troubles found them unable to repay a massive loan to the US state of Rhode Island. Owned developer Big Huge Games went down with the sinking ship, but many of the staff left jobless may be moving to a new Epic Games studio based in Baltimore.

A sequel possibility is currently somewhat dubious, as due to the massive amount of money owed to Rhode Island the state itself is the current owner of the Kingdoms of Amalur intellectual property rights.

Until the legal issues are resolved Gibeau is unlikely to get his wish; but with a big publisher like EA willing to get on board fans of the games can hope to one day revisit the KoA universe.
