The Matrix Online shuts down

28 July 2009

The Matrix Online, Monolith Production’s MMO which was released in 2005, is officially being closed down.
The game proved reasonably popular in the timeframe surrounding the movie releases but slowly began to lose steam in the following years. As of June 1 2009 Sony officially suspended commercial services of the Matrix online, although the game itself continues to operate.

Current members will we unplugged for good at the end of July, at which point players who have paid for services beyond this date will be refunded.

From June 1 Sony no longer offered any customer support and ceased to provide updates for the game.

According to Fudzilla Sony phased out all of the characters who were in the original movie, a move which is said to have contributed to the game’s fated downfall.

In addition the original flawed combat system was allegedly replaced with another, even more flawed system which left players feeling frustrated.
