In the wake of the recent price cut and Slim version announcement PS3 sales have only modestly increased reports VGChartz.
In the week ending the 22nd August sales only increased 12%, although the three days following the announcement saw a 30% increase. This follows significantly dipping PS3 sales in the last few months.
In the last ten weeks the PS3 has shown a worrying decline in sales. In mid June VGCharts reported weekly numbers at roughly 104 000 units, last week yielded only 75 000 units.
The massive drop could be attributed to the hype surrounding the expected price reduction and PS3 Slim announcement. In the months running up to the announcement countless rumours regarding price cuts, backwards compatibility and the existence of the PS3 Slim flooded the internet, all without any official comment from Sony.
These rumors may may have hurt the manufacturer, with potential buyers waiting for a price cut. The announcement did however lead to a massive surge on PS3 pre-orders.
VGChartz shows that last week’s pre orders were greater than units actually sold. The site also forecasts that Slim purchases in the week of its release (1st September) could top 60 000 units in the US alone, suggesting a week of roughly 100 000 sales – a number which would return the console to its mid year figures.
That being said, in the same week Microsoft will drop the price on its elite model to $299.
