Discussions of 3D in their games was noticeably absent from Sony at both E3 and Gamescom, leaving people to wonder where the enthusiasm of the last couple of years has gone. Sony was previously incredibly enthusiastic about incorporating 3D, so the lack of any attention to it at all in their presentations was conspicuous.
However, according to Jim Ryan, CEO of Playstation Europe, there isn’t much significance to it.
“I wouldn’t read too much into its omission. We spoke about it at E3 two years ago and everyone put their glasses on for the first time, and the next year we did the same and everyone did it again. Y’know, there comes a time when you don’t need to talk about it anymore,” the executive added. “Don’t read into the fact too much that we haven’t announced anything about 3D.”
Credit to a renewed interest in 3D is given to Avatar, spawning a whole wave of horrible 3D movies we’re forced to endure, and pay a premium for. 3D TVs saw a big push, but haven’t gained much traction, and it’s questionable whether or not people are even interested in home 3D.

Sony has “absolutely no regrets” about being in third place this generation
I recently ponied up for a 46inch Samsung LED panel with 3D capability. The one I bought is the ES6600 which has a claimed significantly higher refresh rate than the other Samsung panels in the same size and price bracket. With regards to the 3D, I am an absolute convert! I really went into it skeptical at best and having no intention to make use of the 3D facility at all while I cursed the glasses and everything else. But now, having watched Captain America and How to Train Your Dragon in 3D I am tottally convinced that 3D represents an amazing leap forward in home entertainment.
The thing most of us don’t realize, in my opinion, is that 3D on a large high definition LED/LCD panel is far better quality than those you’ll experience at the cinema. The image is both sharper and significantly more vivid, so much so that you almost can’t compare the two.
My advice is that if you’re sitting on the fence regarding buying 3D capability for home use, then just pony up and do it!
