No mod support for Battlefield 3 because DICE is “afraid” of it

Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 fans hoping to one day see that dinosaur mode will have to hope it comes from DICE, because it’s probably not ever coming from anybody else – the developer isn’t planning to release mod tools for the game.

Speaking at the recent Game Developers Conference in Europe, DICE boss Magnus Troedsson explained that there’s just too much risk involved in making even some of the game’s code accessible to users.

Although he acknowledged that modding is a big thing in the PC gaming community, he explained that, basically, “we’re afraid of all the things that can come with releasing the code.”

Another excuse reason cited was that Battlefield 3 is a multi-platform game, and adding mod tools for console is not quite as simple.

“If we do mod support, we want to do it really, really well,” Troedsson said. “We are not ready to do this yet.”

Battlefield 2 included mod tools, but even a quick Google search shows how many cheats and hacks are available to download for the game, maybe lending some credence to Troedsson’s claims. On the other hand, even a quick Google search shows how many cheats and hacks are available for Battlefield 3, which doesn’t include mod tools. So maybe not.
