Like pretty much every other major publisher in the industry, EA has a bit of a reputation among gamers for being an evil sequel machine, but is that reputation deserved? Not so, says Battlefield developer, DICE.
“EA is actually very prone to try out new things. And I have to say that sometimes I think we get too much crap for not being innovative. We do release new IPs, and we do take care of IPs that have been out there. And perhaps not so successful, but we try to get new things out there as well,” DICE boss Karl Magnus Troedsson told Gamasutra.
Acknowledging that, maybe, the perception is somewhat understandable from a gamer’s point of view, he added that it “might sound strange coming from me, working on Battlefield. We’ve been around for 10 years, and we just keep doing more of the same, but being innovative in that space.”
But innovation is a “tricky” thing, he explained. “Innovation is something that actually changes something for the better, renews something – and I think we do that all the time. But some of them are big and some of them are small, and some people disagree, saying, ‘That’s not an innovation!’ and it’s like, ‘No, maybe not for you, but for the people playing the game it’s a big thing.'”
Honestly, I’m not sure what gamers should reasonably expect from FPSes in terms of innovation, anyway. You point and shoot at stuff. That’s basically it, and when a game tries to do something different – like Mirror’s Edge, for example – nobody buys it.

I honestly believe (in terms of shooters) EA actually does a decent job. All the Medal of Honour’s where different, like in Pacific Assault you had the medic and all that. The new Medal of Honour failed because I think it just didn`t give what it sold.
In terms of Battlefield it did well again, Each battlefield has been different on a huge scale. From 1942 where there were certain game mechanics to Battlefield 2, when classes were pre-made, but more specialized. Then came 2142(which i never played, but heard was awesome) and now Battlefield 3, which introduced the Frostbite Engine to the Battlefield fans. Bad Company is sort of weird, cause I don`t really see it as a true Battlefield?
But still I feel it is just stupid of people to be hating on EA. I can`t vouch for EA`s sport games(not including racing games). Let me rather not comment on that…
