According to the latest MyGaming Survey results, conducted in September 2012, PCs are the most popular gaming platform among SA’s gamers, with 78.95% of those surveyed using the platform.
Smartphones were the second most popular platform, with 69.96% of the sample gaming on such devices.
Comparing results to the previous MyGaming survey, conducted in March 2012, it is interesting to note a growth in Xbox users, from 33.49% to 39.47.
Likewise, Tablet PC adoption has increased significantly, by about 10%.
With a sample of 912 responses, we are given a good picture of the high-end SA gaming market and their habits.
The following table provides an overview of the survey feedback. The results are ordered according to popularity.
We asked survey participants to indicate which video game platforms they currently own. The percentage is of the total sample of 912, and it exceeds 100% because this was a multiple choice question, meaning participants use more than one of the platforms listed.

Of course, statistics only make sense in context, and it is important to note who the participants may be – however, we are simply presenting the data results. Others are welcome to take the data and offer further analysis on other factors.
Our previous demographics reports corroborate this information on demographics. I will draw some comparisons in future based on Effective Measure demographics and MyGaming survey demographics. (Spoiler: they tend to match up 😛 )
There are plenty of articles to come based on the survey results which will give us all a better understanding of this market segment. It would make for one ludicrously long article to publish the entire set of results in one go. Rest assured that I will publish an abridged version of a full report once the run of articles has concluded.
We do not purport that these results are the final word on SA gaming market stats. However, with a sample of 912, mathematically speaking, the probability of accuracy across the demographic is very high.
The lovely thing about statistical research is that this adds our pool of knowledge. All of the data we gather is made public through our articles. We are a consumer-oriented website, and this is a consumer-oriented survey. Other large gaming websites are welcome to run surveys and cross-reference our data. We will also continue to run surveys, and over time this should all help create a better understanding of the gamers out there in SA.
Thanks for the support as always!
