Last month, AMD revealed its brand new HD 5800 GPU series in the form of the HD 5870 and HD 5850. Both cards were met with positive reviews, and the HD 5870 now wears the crown of fastest single GPU graphics card in the world.

As expected, AMD has followed up the launch of its high-end products with a more mid-range solution, the HD 5750 and HD 5770.

Both cards use the new 40nm manufacturing process, and should feature great power consumption and low heat and noise generation.
The HD 5770 has exactly half the stream processors (800), texture units (40), ROPs (16) memory buss bandwidth (128-bit) and transistor count (1.04 billion) as the HD 5870. The clock speeds however have been maintained, and the card will ship with a rather sporty 850MHz on the core clock and 1.2 GHz on the memory clock, making it a higher clocking card than the outgoing high-end HD 4870.
In fact, the HD 5770 looks quite similar to the HD 4870 on paper, with the only real difference being the higher clock speeds on the new card, and unfortunately, a lower memory bus bandwidth, which will probably limit the performance substantially.
The HD 5770 will have all of the unique features present within the higher-end HD 5800 cards, including DX 11 support, Eyefinity support and other technical improvements that make the HD 5870 and HD 5850 such dynamic products.
The HD 5750 is similar to the HD 5770, with the main differences being lower power consumption, lower clock speeds, and less texture units.
Both the HD 5770 and HD 5750 feature substantially lower power consumption than the HD 5870 and HD 5850. The new cards are also, as expected, significantly smaller in size than the high-end cards.
Early reviews indicate that the HD 5770 performs well in modern games at 1680×1050, even delivering playable – if not ideal – frame rates in Crysis Warhead. The HD 5750 is generally slightly behind its bigger brother, the difference in performance being more pronounced in some games than others.
In terms of a direct performance comparison, the HD 5770 trades blows with the HD 4870, and two HD 5770s in Crossfire deliver performance somewhere between the HD 5850 and HD 5870. The HD 5770 in particular is potentially an ideal solution for budget-conscious gamers looking to adopt DX 11 with the launch of Windows 7 next week.

Len Nery of Sapphire ATi has quoted the recommended retail price of the HD 5770 at R1999, although, as with the HD 5800 series, we would not be surprised if launch prices are higher due to limited availability initially.
The HD 5770 should be available locally from early next week.
