THE iDOLM@STER is basically a raising simulator, and these types of games have been popular everywhere – in it’s simplest form you’re basically looking at something similar to the Tamagotchi, which was wildly popular when I was in school.
And similarly, Sims anyone? Falls in the same genre.
While I could certainly see the 3rd, 4th and 5th examples as being somewhat bizarre, THE iDOLM@STER doesn’t really fall into that camp.
