With a borderline-cult following, PlanetSide made an impression when it released in 2003, and after an extensive development and beta period, PlanetSide 2 is now out in full force.
The game looks to be living up to expectations, as the sci-fi PC-exclusive sequel currently holds a Metascore of 87, while over on GameRankings it sits on 88.13 percent.
Even the lowest score on Metacritic is a respectable – 70/100 – so what are the critics saying out the MMOFPS?
IGN – 9/10
“The scale of PlanetSide 2’s battles is often breathtaking, as lines of tanks fire at bases while aircraft light up the sky and hundreds of players fill the scene with healing beams and lethal weapons fire.” Read full review
Eurogamer – 9/10
“As a mix of shooter and MMO, PlanetSide 2 is nothing short of a triumph: not quite the best of both worlds, but certainly the best attempt anyone has ever made to fuse them together.” Read full review
GameSpy – 9/10
“PlanetSide 2 shows the PC off. From the gorgeous lighting and huge draw distances, to the intense, multiplayer battles. It’s based on something old, but that was so far ahead of its time that even now the template feels new.” Read full review
PC Gamer – 9/10
“For those with the machine to handle it, PlanetSide 2 is never anything less than staggering. On your own, it’s a spectacle. Stand far enough back and you can almost take it all in, but there’s just too much there to focus on. With teammates, the picture comes into glorious focus.” Read full review
Meritstation – 8.5/10
“While some may argue there are better options in the market, Planetside 2 could stand on its toes with an ERP of 50€. Since it’s absolutely free, simply blasts every competitor away.” Read full review
Game Revolution – 7/10
“PlanetSide 2’s uneven execution makes it fall short of what it aspires to be: the well-rounded MMOFPS many have been craving. It’s fun to squad up with friends and make an impact on the game world with class synergy and the potency of vehicles behind you. However, sequences of enthusiastic, large-scale combat are marred by lag and frustrating bugs.” Read full review
So, will you be giving PlanetSide 2 a chance? It’s free, after all.
