Best sports games of 2012

Sport is always a strong contender within the genre list, as annual sports games continue to improve and improve as each year goes by; but what were the best in 2012?

The following games are the highest rated games on Metacritic and GameRankings, respectively, in the sports genre.

FIFA 13 (Xbox 360) [90; 89.6]

EA Canada have flaunted their huge muscle and budget and brought out not only the best FIFA title, but possibly the best football game ever crafted.

FIFA 13 continued the series’ high pedigree with another brilliant update, and dominates the sporting genre for 2012 with ease.

MLB 12: The Show (PS3) [87; 86.93]

The MLB: The Show series is highly acclaimed to be one of the best in the sporting arena, and this year’s instalment proved that.

The baseball big-hitting was once again loved by critics and gamers everywhere, and hit another home run for the series.

NBA 2K13 (Xbox 360) [88; 86.28]

Like MLB: The Show, the NBA 2K series has a lot to live up to, and 2K13 marked a milestone for the basketball franchise.

The reception was solid, and 2K’s powerful slam dunk was unrivalled, as EA pulled out their NBA series for the second year.

If you’re looking for a basketball sim, there’s no better option.

Madden NFL 13 (PS3) [88; 83.57]

Another year, another instalment of the gridiron. Normally this would mean: take Madden 2012, add something new, add new names , add a slightly, almost unnoticeable new skin, a new cover star, and cash in.

Some features of Madden 13 remind you that there’s a wee bit of rinse-and-repeat, yet some are so unique and refreshing that you really get your money’s worth straight out of the box – either way, it’s one of the highest rated sports games of 2012.
