Below are the top awards as given by the ModDB community and its website editors.
- Players Choice Mod of the Year: Black Mesa
- Players Choice Best Upcoming: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. – Lost Alpha
- Editors Choice Best Overall: Misery
The top 10 PC game mods of 2012 as voted for by the ModDB community are listed below.
10 – The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II mod
TSL mod is an ongoing project to implement and restore much of the content omitted from the commercial release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II. Although lauded by critics and fans for being on of the best Star Wars RPGs out there, it was also criticised for an 11th hour rush to market, which resulted in the omission of plenty of content.
A lot of this content has thus far been lovingly restored into the game, including dialogue trees, sub-plots, and even missing locations.
9 – Brutal Doom – Doom mod
Take your classic Doom experience, and crank everything up a few hellish notches. Everything in Brutal Doom is extremely intense; everything sounds louder, looks bigger, moves faster, and hits harder.
Details have been added to the game environment, such as the camera shaking every time something explodes nearby. Bullet shrapnel can deal player damage. Severed limbs and heads can be kicked, and even used to activate environmental traps. The world features destructible objects, and explosive barrels can even be pushed around to create traps.
Enemies are tougher and smarter, but a headshot hit box has also been added to even the odds. Cinematic executions have been added when using the Beserker power-up. Finally, the weapons have been tweaked, ditching the old progressive strength system of vanilla Doom, so each is as brutally destructive as the next.
8 – CoH: Modern Combat – Company of Heroes mod
This is a total conversion mod for Company of Heroes, that will provide a modern combat setting pitting the modern-day Chinese and American militaries against each other. These two factions feature new companies, abilities, and artwork.
7 – CoH: Blitzkrieg-Mod – Company of Heroes mod
This mod implements a much more realistic weapon damage system in Company of Heroes. It also adds many new skins for infantry and tanks (and wrecks), and adds many new units for all factions.
Commander trees have been modified and enlarged, providing up to 16 upgrades for commanders.
6 – MISERY – S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat mod
A full modification of Call of Pripyat that touches every game aspect including textures, SFX, music, weapons, AI, items, weather difficulty and much more.
5 – Rise of the Reds – C&C Generals: Zero Hour mod
Rise of the Reds is an ambitious project, as it includes a resurgent Russian Federation into the universe of Command & Conquer Generals. Along with this new faction are numerous additions to the original factions of USA, China, and GLA.
The mod is still being developed and there are plans to introduce a second new faction, the European Continental Alliance.
4 – CoH: Eastern Front– Company of Heroes mod
Long-time favourite, Eastern Front, returned with more updates and tweaks in 2012. Eastern Front has succeeded in adding a full Soviet faction, packed with unique and exciting units to the existing armies
3 – Cry of Fear – Half-Life mod
Proving the longevity of the original Half-Life engine, Cry of Fear is a total conversion mod for the game, providing a more focused horror experience.
You wake up in a dark alley, not knowing what happened, which leads you to attempt to seek out the truth of what’s going on.
Where do “they” come from? What has happened? Cry of Fear gives players the chance answer these questions, if you’re brave enough.
2 – DayZ – ARMA II: Combined Operations mod
The famous Day Z zombie-apocalypse-survival mod almost needs no introduction.
Set in a 225km² open world post-soviet state wiped out by an unknown infection, players can go solo, team up with friends, or take on the world as they choose a path in a brutal and chilling landscape using whatever means you stumble upon to survive.
1 – Black Mesa – Half-Life 2 mod
Black Mesa is the long-awaited Half-Life 2 total conversion mod that recreates the experience of the original Half-Life game.
Powered by Valve’s Source engine, Black Mesa is an updated, high-definition nostalgic adventure into the game world that started the Half-Life continuum and introduced scientist Gordon “Silent but Violent” Freeman to the world as a gun-toting, bullet-dodging Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics.
Hang on, how are people still playing Generals: Zero Hour, let alone making mods for it? That is by far my all time favourite game but it’s just impossible to come by anywhere.
