A new console has emerged on Kickstarter, and its sure to give the Ouya console some serious competition.
The new campaign is for the GameStick, which is PlayJam’s shot at a new Android-based console; and calling it a console is a stretch, because it’s the size of a USB flash stick.
PlayJam is asking for $100,000 to help bring the pint-sized gaming console and controllers into production.
The GameStick plugs directly into the HDMI slot of most modern HD TVs, and the developers are saying that they have at least 200 games that will work on the GameStick.
The controller was also an important facet of developing the GameStick, and looks somewhat like the Wii’s classic controller.
The following system specifications are detailed on the Kickstarter page:
- Processor – Amlogic 8726-MX
- Memory – 1GB DDR3 / 8GB FLASH
- Content Download Manager w/ cloud storage for games.
- WiFi – 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth – LE 4.0
- O/S – Android Jelly Bean
- Controller – Bluetooth, 3 mode controller: gamepad, mouse and keyboard with support for up to 4 controllers.
- Full 1080p HD video decoding
The campaign has already received over $69,000 of backing with 29 days still to do.

They already hit their $100k mark. Took 30hrs. I still think the Ouya is a better choice since it uses the tried and tested Tegra T33 which has quite a bit of “Tegra-optimised” games for it unlike the Amlogic. Not that I would even use the Ouya as a gaming device. $99 media device, yes please. If Ouya were to expand the storage to maybe 32GB then it would blow me away. However nothing some silver-soldering and know-how wont fix.
