HDMI 1.3 to support 3D

5 January 2010

The HDMI group announced a while back that in order to take advantage of the latest 3D craze users would have to have HDMI 1.4, a technology that is incompatible with the vast majority of Blu-Ray players, including our beloved PS3.

An update from the group will please owners of current technology because as it turns out HDMI 1.3 will support 3D viewing. There is a catch however: using HDMI 1.3 its will only be possible to watch 3D movies in 1080i, as opposed to full HD 1080p which is supported only by HDMI 1.4 when watching 3D movies.

Users will also require 3D compatible HD TVs as they feature dual-scanning abilities which allow them to display near simultaneous frames, a prerequisite for 3D TV. Most current generation HD TVs are single scan, and therefore cannot display 3D in the same way.
